Kettling is exactly what it sounds like: noises that sound like a whistling of water coming to the boil. It's caused by an accumulation of limescale or corrosion debris in the system, sometimes within the boiler itself. Unfortunately, this is a natural process and happens more often in areas with hard water.

Web. Noise # 1: Banging If your boiler makes a single BANG when it fires up (and only when it fires up), it's most likely due to delayed ignition. However, if your boiler makes recurring banging and popping noises as it operates, it's most likely due to "kettling". Let's look at both of these issues below.

Web. If you hear a humming noise coming from your noisy boiler, then it's likely the pressure is set too high. If your pressure is either too high or too low, it will not be running properly, and if it's excessively high, it could even cause damage. All boilers have a gauge where you can check the current pressure. Web. Web.

If your boiler is making loud banging noises, it may be the result of a faulty thermostat or a build-up of debris on the boiler's heat exchanger. If there is a build-up of debris, you'll need a qualified professional to carry out a power flush. A power flush removes the sludge in your system, preventing blockages and heating inefficiency. Web. Web. Web. Web. The circulating pump operates to circulate the heated water from the boiler to radiator and then back to the boiler. If the circulating pump somehow gets set at a faster speed, then you would witness vibrations and a loud humming noise. If that is the case then you need to look for the circulating pump of your system, and check the speed settings.
